The London Science Museum

We spent five hours at the London Science Museum, and there was so much to see and do, we could have spent many more hours at the museum.

We didn’t need to pay an entry fee, instead we made a voluntary donation.

There were additional costs, i.e. £20 for the IMAX 3D Cinema. A selection of high quality cinematic excellence to view. We chose to view the ‘Hidden Universe’.

There was another fee for the interactive ‘Wonder LAB’. So much to do, for all ages!!

The Museum’s exhibits comprised of: Time, Space, Transport, Aviation, early prosthetics, and many other exhibits.

Chichester Tennis Tournament- July, 2017.

Alexander played his best  ever tennis !!  His serve stronger, and his fighting spirit was relentless. His hunger to win, was exhilarating!!

Alexander played three matches, and his first seemed to run on, for eternity!! All three matches were lengthy, and on the day, the sun had been intense.

Alexander played three sets (1st match), including a tiebreak.

Result: 5th overall (8 competitors).

The competition was of a high standard, and well organised.

The Qualifying Sussex Championships at Chichester

Alexander and I ‘warmed up’, before the competition started.

Alexander’s first match was with Josh.

Duration: 1:05mins

Alexander won:  4 – 2, 5-3.

After a 10 minute break, Alexander was keen to play his second match.

Alexander’s second opponent was Isaac.

Now this match was another story!! Isaac took it upon himself, to consume a banana during the match!!

Alexander would applaud Isaac, on a few of his returns, and asked if Isaac was alright, as Isaac was misbehaving!!

Alexander won: 4-1,  4-0

It just goes to show, focus on your game, remain calm, and you get the job done!!

Alexander, was very excited to find out, that he would be competing, for the Sussex County Championships, on Bank Holiday Monday, at Lewes.

Cranleigh, Surrey – August, 2017

This year, Alexander’s first competition at Cranleigh, Surrey. The Tournament itself, hadn’t been held, since 2002.

The Cranleigh Grass Tennis Festival was well organised and very friendly. The facilitates (including, a coffee and an ice-cream van), were very good.

Alexander won 50% of his matches, in both singles and doubles. Overall, he came 5th  (from 9 players).

For the ‘Doubles’, Alexander partnered Tommy. Both boys suited one another, and they communicated very well.

One of the best tennis Tournaments, we have been too. This is Alexander’s third year, for  competing in tennis tournaments.

The Haslemere (Surrey) Tennis Tournament – 2017

The day seemed more akin to autumn, than a late summer’s day !!

On first impressions, the Haslemere Tennis Club, hadn’t seemed very welcoming. In addition to the unfriendliness, the courts (the Council maintains) were slippery.

Alexander, couldn’t go for every long shot, and he still fell over three times!! Several other young players endured the same experience.

Alexander’s matches are always lengthy, because Alexander never gives up, and he fights for every point. This competition proved to be the rule, rather than the exception. The calibre had been very high.  Alexander won, one out of the five matches, he played that day. Every match could have gone either way, and the conditions hadn’t helped.

Alexander’s final opponent, had been Eddie. The match had been played in good spirits.  It had been the longest, with several deuces!!  Eddie only just beat Alexander!! Alexander came away in good humour, and was looking forward to a re-match!! Hopefully, Alexander and Eddie will play each other in the future. The match was exceedingly close, and very exciting. The crowd,  looked on with awe.

Alexander and I, came away with our opinions dramatically altered for the better. The  organisers,  ran the tennis tournament with precision, and with a very high standard.

One of the club’s coaches,  had even  asked an older female player (yellow 2 ranking), to play Alexander, so he could increase his match play!!

Yes, overall, our day at the Haslemere Tennis Club had been excellent, and we enjoyed the day !!

Looking forward to our return…

Haslemere – August 2017

Mullion, Lizard, Kynance Cove & Penzance (Cornwall), July 2017.

Penzance.

Location:  Mullion, S.W. Cornwall.

Spent an amazing week, staying in a two-bedroom bungalow. We were able, to be use the facilities from the hotel (next door). The beach was a short, but steep walk away from the bungalow.  We used the hotel’s tennis court, and made great use of the ‘games room’!!

We visited: Lizard Point, (which is the most Southerly point of the UK), Penzance, Posidhu Cove,  Helston, St. Michael Mount, Trebah (with its own Beach), and Glendurgan Gardens.

The County Championships (Sussex) – 28/08/2017

This year, the County Championships (Sussex), were held at Lewes, East Sussex. We arrived early, so Alexander could ‘warm-up’, before playing his matches.

We were very impressed with the Lewes Tennis Club, and its facilities, which comprised of: a cafe, a gym, a fabulous Court layout, and every surface (apart from clay!!), to play on.

Alexander, had three epic matches, all were 1:30 mins duration, and two matches, went to 10 point tie-breaks!! The high 28c temperature, meant all players, were feeling the heat!!

Alexander’s, first opponent was Archie, and he was a good player. However, Archie played the ‘mind’ game!! Which lead to Archie winning the first match, but only just !! There were only two points in it!!

Archie continually queried most of Alexander’s calls, by shouting “Are you sure?”, which obviously places his opponent (in this case, Alexander), on the wrong footing.

Alexander seemed intimidated, and also seemed to doubt himself.  Frequently, Archie relayed the score incorrectly, (to Archie’s advantage!!). However, Alexander remained calm and collected, at every turn, and corrected Archie.

For the 2nd set, Alexander won. He played with confidence and assertion, which had been very reassuring to see.

Alexander’s first match results:

3 – 5,   4 – 0,  8 -10 (tiebreaker)

Alexander’s second opponent was Johan. Johan, had a stronger forehand, and for most of the match, Alexander played to Johan’s backhand!!

Alexander won his second match (with a tiebreaker).

4 – 1,  4 – 5, 11 – 9 (tiebreaker).

Alexander’s third (and final) opponent, was Lewis.

Lewis hadn’t seemed so exhausted, as Alexander had been. Alexander made several winners, but it hadn’t been enough.

Alexander’s results:

1 – 4,  2 – 4.

Alexander played for 4.5hrs.

Southsea Beach Cafe, West Sussex

Today, I went for lunch at the Southsea Beach Cafe. It was very busy, but we didn’t have to queue for very long, before we were taken to our table, with a good sea view.

The cafe seems to be divided into two parts, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The decor is very in-keeping with the beach life, nautic rustic!!  The vibe is very casual, and age diverse, which makes the cafe a destination.

I ordered the fish and chips. The white fish was smallish, and the batter tasted dry, as the chips did too. However, the service, the ambience and the great location, would mean that I would give it another try!!

A great eating venue for the Spring and Summer. The need for more contemporary eateries, would be great for Southsea!!
